Who's up for more Mahler??

For those who weren't at the AGM today, we're delighted to announce details of our weekend project 2018.

  • 6th-8th April 2018

  • Mahler, Symphony No. 2

  • Conductor: Frank Zielhorst

  • Chorus Master: Gavin Carr

For those not familiar with Gavin, he is currently Chorus Master of the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus as well as a guest conductor with the BBC Symphony Chorus and the Philharmonia Chorus.

He has had a distinguished career as a singer in his own right. He sang the title role in The Barber of Seville for English National Opera opposite Lesley Garrett, and also appeared as Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas and St Ignatius in Four Saints in Three Acts for them.

Other current music directorships include the Bath Minerva Choir, and his own professional choir, Chorus Angelorum, with whom he recorded two of his brother Paul Carr’s large scale choral works.

We're very excited to be working with him on this project, as well as welcoming back the ever-popular and much-loved Frank.

More details on how you can sign up to follow in due course.

All the best,

Chris

25 June concert details...

Hi all,

Not long until our first rehearsal for the summer concert! Seemed like a good time to get in touch with details (see below).

If you're receiving this email it's because you've said you're playing. We would ask that at this stage, if for any reason you are unable to play you would assist us in finding a dep.

Unless you have already told us otherwise, we are assuming you will be at all rehearsals. Please do let us know as soon as possible if this has changed.

We're still looking for 2-3 more percussionists. If anyone knows anyone who might be keen to join us, please let me know.

Best wishes,

Chris

News/updates - October 2016

** 22 October 2016 concert ------------------------------------------------------------

On behalf of the committee, a huge thank you to all involved in the concert on Saturday. From all the reports I've had, it was a resounding success. Paying audience numbered 105, which is a little under target but still very heathy. I've had a number of emails congratulating us, including the following from Michael Foyle:

Dear Chris,

Just to let you know that it was a huge pleasure to meet and play with Magna Sinfonia - a high-level, warm-hearted and quality group of musicians. It was great fun to play Bruch with them, and renew the collaboration with Tom, so thank you for inviting me.

All best wishes and thanks,

Michael.

It was a tough programme and tough time-frame but the consensus is that we pulled it off!

** Next concerts ------------------------------------------------------------

Our next concert is on Saturday 10 December at St Aldhelm's Church in conjunction with Salvacosta vocal harmony group. It'll consist of some lighter Christmas-themed music. We're restricted on space so this will feature a smaller orchestra.

Our next main concert is then on Saturday 4 February 2017. The programme is:

* Samuel, On This Precious Earth (a Dorset premier)

* Copland, Apalachian Spring

* Sibelius, Symphony No. 1

Conductor: Cayenna Ponchione (http://cayennaponchione.com/)

All rehearsal dates are on the website (http://www.magnasinfonia.org) under the members area (http://www.magnasinfonia.org/dates-for-your-diary) .

A few other members of the committee will be taking on booking players (See below) and will be in touch in the next week or two to invite you to play.

Violins: Ben

Violas/woodwind/percussion: Chris

Cellos and basses: Christina Leigh

Brass: Julian

** Subs ------------------------------------------------------------

We had a committee meeting last night at which it was agreed we will introduce a reduced subs for people in full-time education of £15. We discussed the idea of collecting subs in advance but decided that we will continue to collect subs at the first rehearsal.

** Rehearsal pattern ------------------------------------------------------------ We are in the process of reviewing the pattern of rehearsals, both when they happen in relation to the concert and also the structure of the rehearsals themselves. We have recognised that the pattern adopted for this concert meant many felt they didn't have enough time to do their own personal practice. Also, starting the second rehearsal with less than a week to go meant a certain amount of panic! We don't intend to increase rehearsal time but will be looking to spread rehearsals out a bit more and include some sectional time. This will be to implement for the June concert as dates for February have already been published.

As always, if you have any thoughts/feedback we're always keen to hear from you!

** Members Facebook page ------------------------------------------------------------

If you haven't yet done so, do sign up to our members facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/magnasinfoniamembers/) . (NOTE: This is different to our public facebook page). It's a private group and we use it to communicate important messages.

Rehearsal details

Hi all,

Please find below rehearsal schedules for the next two rehearsals.

On another note, please do all you can to help us sell loads of tickets! We're actually 12 players down on what we had anticipated which has had a rather worrying impact on the orchestra's finances.

Clearly this sort of situation happening regularly would make the orchestra unsustainable. We're really keen to make sure Magna Sinfonia is working for those who want to be part of it so we'll be seeking your opinion on a few ideas moving forward which include paying subs in advance of the first rehearsal, paying subs annually, changing the pattern of rehearsals. If you've got any thoughts on any of this then do let us know.

All the best,
Chris and the committee
